through my amazing powers of awesomeness, as well as my stunning nerdishnesm i have found out the story behind that opening sequence. to whit:
"The piece was actually a commercial for a British TV network that just picked up the rerun rights to the Matt Groening masterpiece. The Simpsons had long been a hit in the U.K. before hand, so they felt the need to go the extra mile in order to get everyone’s attention.
So they hired Ricky Gervais, best known over there for creating the original, very British, version of The Office, and he put the live action version together as a 30-second commercial. If you look carefully at the spot, you’ll see other cast members of the incredibly funny show scattered throughout the thing.
Apparently, the word on the street was so intense that Groening himself had to check it out. He was so impressed he used it for last Sunday’s episode, an episode that oddly enough was also co-written by Gervais.
Last I heard, the episode itself went over so well that Gervais is now a permanent member of The Simpsons writing team. Good for him."
