Surprisingly, the highlight of my weekend was not watching 12 hours of football at Casa Riccobono. It was, in fact, a little something that occured on the ride to Shaolin. Imagine my delight (and Dom's horror) when Tom busted out...wait for it...a QUICK FIX tape! (in case you don't know/forgot, that was Dom and Tom's supermetaltastic band in highschool.) Man, if I had known I was marrying such a rockstar, I woulda gotten implants and some leather pants, just so i could hang.

My question to you, Emily Rooney [executive editor and host of "Greater Boston" and "Beat the Press" on "WGBH."], should "ABC" be embarrassed at put on a $40 million movie on this still very painful subject of 9/11, with a number of made-up scenes and made-up dialogue, that only in recent days has the network been scrambling to fix?

ROONEY (angry and disgusted): Well, there's no such thing as being embarrassed anymore. The only people who should be embarrassed are the ones who tune in to watch this. My feeling is it's like an Oliver Stone movie, you get what you deserve if you tune in and watch this.

It's fiction. It's a novel. I can't even believe it's engendered the kind of acrimony that it has. I mean, I'm so uninterested in this, I force myself to read the articles about it.

i've decided to start selling off my comics. well, just the ones i'm not that into anymore. i'm doing this both to increase my income now that i'm unemployed and to increase the amount of space i can allow dw to cram his stuff into. that said, check out my very first ebay auction. its for a lot of "Formerly Known as the Justice League" and "JLA Classified" comics. i don't have any ratings on ebay (i used to in a different account, but then had to set up a new one because i couldn't remember my old pay pal account information that was tied to the ebay account, so yadda, yadda, yadda, i've got a new ebay account.)

there's this organization called shorewalkers whose "mission is to enhance, enjoy and protect the parks, promenades, and paths along the waters throughout the New York metropolitan area." every first saturday in may, they do something called the great saunter, where they walk the entire perimeter of manhattan island. i want to do it this weekend and was wondering if any of you cats would be interested. i'm planning to do the whole thing (though it is 32 miles, which seems a bit daunting) but you can drop in and out at any time. anyone interested? here's details:

On Saturday, May 6, 2006, the Shorewalkers will hold their 21th annual Great Saunter—a 32-mile walk around Manhattan’s rim. The pace is steady, but not fast. Most of the route is fairly flat. We keep to the waterside as much as possible. No rain date. We’ll go rain or shine and some of us will make it round, regardless of the weather. We walk through over a dozen parks, and touch a dozen cultures. You can drop off at many points.

The following are departure times. Be at your chosen start point at least 15 minutes before we depart in order to sign in.

7:30 AM: (Start) At corner of Fulton & Water Streets near the South Street Seaport.

7:45 AM: South Ferry Concession Stand outside the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

9:45 AM: Circle Line Terminal at W. 42nd St. & 12th Ave.

11:20 AM: Riverbank State Park: By the bus stop inside the park, near the northern end. W. 138 St.

1:30 PM: (Lunch) Inwood Park: near Flagpole

5:00 PM: Carl Schurz Park: East River Promenade near flagpole, at E. 86th St.

in an effort to be a less-worse gay than terence, i just sent the following email to my siblings. better late than never, eh?

Subject: I'm gay.

I've been thinking of the funniest way to tell you guys, and I figured putting it in the subject field was the way to go. So, yeah... I'm gay. I don't imagine this news should come as any surprise to you guys. I mean, when was the last time you guys heard I had a girlfriend? And how many straight guys do you know have lived with their female best friend? So, why am I telling you guys? And why now? Well, I'm thirty now, and it's more than a little ridiculous that I've never told you before. I suppose I never said anything before because we're not really that close, and I prefer to keep my business to myself. But that's unfair to you guys. We are, after all, family. But I also have somewhat selfish reason for doing this as well. Specifically, I'm planning on telling mommy this summer when dad's away on his Habitat trip. I'm sure that she will call you guys right after I tell her, and I'd kinda need you guys to be in the loop so that you're not caught off guard, and can maybe help her realize it's not the end of the world. I don't imagine that I'll ever tell dad, as he's really living too much in 1940's Italy to be able to deal.

I imagine you guys might have questions, so let me fill you in on a bit of my history: I've been "this way" pretty much since forever, and came out to my friends during high school. I used to go to a support group for gay teens while in H.S. (I would tell mom that I was going to the library to study), and there I met my first boyfriend, Al. It was a pretty silly teenage romance, and didn't last long. I won't bore you with the details of all of the relationships I've had since then, but you guys might be interested to know about Andrew, my current boyfriend. We've been together for a little over 3 years now, and you guys have both met him. Alex, he was one of the guys who helped move you metal table to your office, Val, he was one of the guys who was over when you came to my house and borrowed DVDs. Andrew moved in with me in January. (Hence my hesitation of having you and Paul over, Val.) He's a really great guy, and is very good for me and very good to me.

On the one hand, I hope this news doesn't change anything between us, but on the other hand, I hope it does. Specifically, I hope that I can now let myself be more honest and open with you guys. I also hope that you guys still view me as the same person I've always been, because that's what I am. I'd appreciate it if you didn't mention all this to mom and dad, and allow me to do that on my own time. Feel free to tell Erika and Paul, or whoever else. All of my friends know, so I don't really mind if any of yours do. I'm totally open to any questions or comments you guys might have. Sorry for the somewhat impersonal method o f of telling you guys over email, but it just seemed the most practical way of letting both of you know at the same time.

I am glad you told me and actually not surprised. I think I was always afraid of asking you about girlfriends because there was a suspicion. Having said that I am sort of digesting it but want to make sure I am supportive to you.
I wish you felt more comfortable about telling me earlier and to feel like you would feel like I would love you any way you are and support you in any way. Having said that I respect you wanting to tell mommy and can understand your needing to do that. However I do feel that she might not be able to wrap her head around it or deal with it. Having said that I know you probably don't want to feel like you are living a lie and want to share it with mommy. I am just really worried about mommy's health if you tell her (I guess I am being selfish and I just don't want something to happen to her, you know how I am always afraid something might happen to her and she might die-I know it is morbid but I can't help it. I just think you telling her might have a physical effect on her) I am here if you want to talk anytime. I am off the rest of this week and next week if you want to get together and talk.
From what I know of Andrew he seems like a very nice guy both times that I met him (I also met him during the black out).

I just want you to be happy and live a fulfilling life while at the same time having mommy be around as long as possible. I know you might think I am crazy, but I do think this will have a physical affect on her.

I am truly happy that you have opened up to us because, as you said, it allows us to be more honest and open with each other. I admire you for your courage, and if anything I hope that now that you are "out" in the open (with us) you will become more part of our lifes. I can just imagine how difficult it must have been for you to deal with these issues by yourself having the kind of close-minded parents that we have. I am sorry that I was not there for you, but myself, Erika, and the your two loving nephews have nothing but respect for your choices, and love for the person that you are (who doesn't love a gay uncle? :) ). I hope that we get a better chance to meet Andrew, and if he is to become a more important part of your life, we would like (if you so desire) that he become a more important part of ours (does he also want to baby sit next Thursday? :)). Thank you for opening up to us. And yes it wasn't a surprise not for all the reasons you say but because I always felt there was something you were not letting us see in you and that seemed to be the most likely reason. Especially coming from the family you come from.

I have to put my 2 cents in however about coming out to your mom.
My feeling is and maybe Alex disagrees with me because he takes a blind eye to the close mindedness of your parents. But my experience this past year with your mom sort of surprised me. When Alex and I were on the verge of breaking our marriage up your mom seemed to have a very closed minded view of the whole thing. I think she really believed if she prayed to God all would be fixed. God had nothing to do with any of it.

This is obviously your life and I wish you so much happiness but you may want to ease her into the whole thing. I'm not sure telling her you are gay and in a relationship and living with the person all at one time might not be a good idea. I also think you are asking a lot of her to keep something like that a secret from your Dad. That will be a huge burden on her and knowing your mom she will think it's her fault you are gay. When Alex and I were going through our stuff she would go on and on about the things she did with him and all she ever wanted was to do the best for him and all the mistakes she made etc.... I kept saying to her it has nothing to do with you Nice, this is Alex. These things are wrong with Alex because he is Alex this has nothing to do with you and let's just not go there.

There is so much to say on this matter and it's too much to write. Before you have the big talk I would love to meet and talk in person. To talk about what happened between Alex and myself this past winter and what I learned about everyone in the family. Especially your mom and dad and vale. Stuff you may be totally unaware because no one said anything.

Anyway, I am happy you are in a great relationship with a great guy. And I am excited to have a new outside member of our family.
Nothing has changed between us except I hope we can be that much more open with everything now.

In other events, if any of you are interested, I posted some pics I took at the Insectarium in Montreal on my Flickr site. Some really interesting specimen among them. It was really cool to see them alive and in action, but behind glass. I seem to really enjoy taking pics of bugs and such, as is also evinced by many of the other photos I've taken. So I was back in Stuyvesant again for a math team coaches' meeting. While there, I picked up a copy of the Spectator (of course) and it had a couple of pages full of pictures from Halloween. Man, students at Stuy are way better at Halloween than those chumps I teach at Dewey. Best costume was definitely 'Duff Man', unless you're into teenage girls in trashy outfits (Which of course I'm not).

And to further a previous line of conversation in the 345 wall, Stuyvesant seems to have acknowledged its lack of teacher hotness and tried to correct the problem. Howdy, y'all. I know it's been a powerful long time since I posted, but my mind has been occupied with LSAT prep for quite some time now.

I got my LSAT score on Saturday and figured I would just share it with the blog all at once instead of having the information trickle out to my friends over an extended period. As you may have guessed from the title of the post, I got a 171. That's the 98th percentile, y'all. Woo-hoo!

You can all breathe a sigh of relief. Mostly just me, though.

They look like something you’d see in a medieval torture chamber or martial arts movie. Instead, police say, they found in the home of a Marshfield man elaborate throwing stars, a battle ax and a 10-pound stabbing weapon that projects multiple blades more than 10 inches in front of the hand.

The unusual weapons are considered collector’s items by some martial arts and Dungeons and Dragons fans. In Massachusetts, however, many such weapons are illegal, a point driven home recently when a Suffolk Superior Court judge ordered three online companies to stop selling them here.

‘‘These were definitely over the top,’’ Marshfield Police Lt. Robert Wright said of the weapons found a week ago in the home of Paul Menslage on Franklin Street. ‘‘We’ve seen some fancy knives and Dungeons and Dragons type stuff, but nothing like this.’’

‘‘The blades on all these weapons are razor sharp,’’ he said.

Wichita dance-off turns into brawl

WICHITA — One person required stitches, and a mother and son were arrested after two drill teams began brawling at an impromptu “dance off” over the weekend.

The Dynamic Steppers were practicing routines Saturday night when members of another drill team, the White Tigers, showed up and issued a dance-off challenge, police said.

When the challengers appeared to be losing, a woman struck a 17-year-old Dynamic Steppers drummer in the face with a drumstick, said Wichita police Lt. Jeff Easter.

The teen punched the 28-year-old woman in the face. He then ran toward his Ford Explorer and tried to run over spectators, witnesses told police.

The boy’s mother, a Dynamic Steppers coach, grabbed a box cutter and sliced the other woman’s right arm, Easter said. The wound required eight stitches.

An estimated 50 persons became involved in the altercation.

did anyone catch last Sunday’s surprisingly-early-in-the-year simpsons premiere? i thought that the episode was pretty good, despite the fact that it was yet another episode wherein homer does something to enrage marge and threaten their marriage, but then they get back together at the end for no particularly good reason (which are almost as tiresome as lisa episodes). i thought the family guy premiere was kinda weak, though i am kinda looking forward to the new stewie dvd coming out soon.

After the recent emotional rollercoaster that is space travel pretty much killed my childhood dream of being an astronaut, my other (slightly more adult) dream of joining the Russian Navy has been pretty much crushed as well.

Turns out that submarines seem to be as successful as spaceships. Although it's funny that the Russians haven't had as many collossal space disasters, but this is the second international incident involving a trapped Russian sub. Go figure!

Sadly, I was left disappointed. All the papers could muster was a lame "BOY, OH BOY". What makes it worse is that the Post and the News both ran that exact headline! After a trial that brought us such classic headlines as "SCARY POPPINS" (when he was photographed outside the courthouse with an umbrella), I feel a little empty.

Anyone else have a good headline idea for today?

So I spoke to Shawn on Sunday morning. I, of course, asked him when Susie was due (She's past due and will have labor induced this Thursday if nothing happens between now and then). I also asked about the new house and if there was anything else new to report. He mentioned his mother had visited. Not very exciting. But today I came home and in my mail I found a WEDDING ANNOUNCEMENT from him and Susie. So apparently when I asked, "What's up?" having gotten married two days earlier seemed to have slipped his mind. Like I said: same old Shawn.

Two Star Wars fans are in a critical condition in hospital after apparently trying to make light sabres by filling fluorescent light tubes with petrol.
A man, aged 20, and a girl of 17 are believed to have been filming a mock duel when they poured fuel into two glass tubes and lit it.

The pair were rushed to hospital after one of the devices exploded in woodland at Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

like dom, i’m eschewing the comments section for this post. andrew and i saw the movie yesterday at the magic Johnson theatre in harlem. (my feelings about the movie fall somewhere between dom’s and tom’s. i didn’t LOVE it, but i didn’t hate it either. the acting kinda stank, and i would have wanted more epic battles, but that’s just me. i agree with dom’s assessment of the “noooo!” scene. totally ridiculous. but putting all that aside, the real interesting thing about my movie-going experience was one of the pre-movie ads featuring magic Johnson himself. it was one of those “turn off your cell-phones/don’t talk while the movie is going on” dealies, but the best part was that besides reminding us that delicious snacks are available at the concession stand, and to throw away our garbage in their proper containers magic Johnson also told us not to wear hats or (gang) colors to the theatre so as to guarantee a good time is had by all. i’d make one of my usual glib comments right about now, but given the furor that the president of mexico caused a few weeks ago, i think it better to just keep my big fat mouth shut.

Tom is an Enemy of The Republic

I just got home from seeing Revenge of the Sith, and I must say that I absolutely loved it. Loved it. I know there's already a thread concerning this, but I feel pretty strongly. With all due respect to Tom, I just didn't see what he must have seen.

I'll concede that there were a handful of awkwardly delivered lines in the movie (and I really mean only a handful, especially when compared to the previous two), but the other 99% was just about all anyone could reasonably expect. The special effects were the closest thing to seamless that has yet to be produced, the political maneuvering was clever, and I really felt that this was simply the movie that I've been waiting for. Since 1983. It was evil, with an especially evil nod to Ian McDiarmid. Now that's a Sith Lord.

I'm not going to go on about this forever, because I know that all of you will see it either way, but I need to add one more thing. There was a sole inexcusable snippet in this movie that I admit almost ruined it (though again, the balance of the movie was overwhelmingly good). It can be summed up with Noooooo!. You'll all find out what I mean soon enough.

Lest I forget, condolences to the Repola family.

So what's the most metal thing each of you has done in the past month? If your answer wasn't, "Go see a heavy metal band at a local club or bar" then perhaps you should consider seeing Dead Men Dreaming at Don Hill's this Sunday. What's so special about Dead Men Dreaming? Well, my brother is in the band. Other attractions that night are:
-Members of the extended Riccobono clan. Feel free to stare awkwardly at them. Throw popcorn or some other small snack food if you so desire.
-DMD will be followed eventually by a Motely Crue cover band. This will coincide with a raffle in which you could win a brand new Nikki Six signature series bass guitar. I know you want one of those!
-Depending on the size of my group, we may get a free meel out of the deal by meeting up with my dad and a few of his office cronies before hand.
The bottom line is the band goes on at 8:15, I'll be there, and I haven't seen any of you suckers in q while. If you're in, let me know because I have tickets that are good for $5 admission as opposed to $10 at the door.

So it turns out that a science teacher that works with me in Dewey is actually the person on which the title character from Welcome Back Cotter is based on. Apparantly the whole crew from that show is mostly an amalgam of actual students from this guy's class over a two or three year period, and these nuts really did track him down and knock on his fire escape window at ridiculous times at night. I swear, the randomest things go down while working in a high school.
